Online gamers crack AIDS enzyme puzzle

Online gamers have achieved a feat beyond the realm of Second Life or Dungeons and Dragons: they have deciphered the structure of an enzyme of an AIDS-like virus that had thwarted scientists for a decade.

The exploit is published on Sunday in the journal Nature Structural & Molecular Biology, where -- exceptionally in scientific publishing -- both gamers and researchers are honoured as co-authors.

Their target was a monomeric protease enzyme, a cutting agent in the complex molecular tailoring of retroviruses, a family that includes HIV.

Figuring out the structure of proteins is vital for understanding the causes of many diseases and developing drugs to block them.

But a microscope gives only a flat image of what to the outsider looks like a plate of one-dimensional scrunched-up spaghetti. Pharmacologists, though, need a 3-D picture that "unfolds" the molecule and rotates it in order to reveal potential targets for drugs.

This is where Foldit comes in.

Developed in 2008 by the University of Washington, it is a fun-for-purpose video game in which gamers, divided into competing groups, compete to unfold chains of amino acids -- the building blocks of proteins -- using a set of online tools.

To the astonishment of the scientists, the gamers produced an accurate model of the enzyme in just three weeks.

Cracking the enzyme "provides new insights for the design of antiretroviral drugs," says the study, referring to the lifeline medication against the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

It is believed to be the first time that gamers have resolved a long-standing scientific problem.

"We wanted to see if human intuition could succeed where automated methods had failed," Firas Khatib of the university's biochemistry lab said in a press release. "The ingenuity of game players is a formidable force that, if properly directed, can be used to solve a wide range of scientific problems."

One of Foldit's creators, Seth Cooper, explained why gamers had succeeded where computers had failed.

"People have spatial reasoning skills, something computers are not yet good at," he said.

"Games provide a framework for bringing together the strengths of computers and humans. The results in this week's paper show that gaming, science and computation can be combined to make advances that were not possible before."

Want to avoid raising spoiled kids?

Consider the Wellington Burt School of Wealthy Parenting.

Wellington R. Burt was a rich timber baron from Saginaw, Mich. He died in 1919 with a multimillion-dollar fortune -- one of America's largest at the time.

Yet rather than risk messing up his kids lives with a huge inheritance, he created an unusual will.

He stated that his fortune would be distributed to the family -- but only 21 years after his grandchildren's death.

His children and grandchildren weren't entirely deprived. Burt gave his "favorite son" $30,000 a year but the rest of his children got allowances roughly equal to those he gave his cook and chauffeur, according to the Saginaw News.

"I'm pretty sure he didn't like his family back then," said Christina Cameron, an heir and a great-great-great grandchild of Burt's.

Now that it's 21 years since the death of the last grandchild, the fortune is finally being turned over to Cameron and 11 others, including three great-grandchildren, seven great-great grandchildren and another great-great-great grandchild. The fortune is valued at more than $100 million. (She'll get a little more than $2.6 million, since those further up the family tree get more under a master agreement).

Saginaw County Chief Probate Judge Patrick McGraw said the estate is "one of the most complicated research projects" he's faced in his 12-year career in Saginaw.

Of course, skipping a generation is not unusual among rich parents who want to send a message to their kids (but somehow not their grandkids). Generation-skipping trusts and other estate-planning structures have been around for ages.

But Burt's will takes kid-skipping to a new, almost punitive level. Who knows, maybe his kids and grand-kids were better off for the lack of inheritance, or maybe the money would have allowed them to lead fuller, happier lives. We'll never know. It would be interesting to compare the lives of his new heirs with those who were shut out.

What is the correct way of eating fruits?

FRUITS SHOULD BE EATEN ON AN EMPTY STOMACH.

Shelter Home man ready for Mt Kinabalu

PETALING JAYA: Paralysed, left in skin and bones and covered with bedsores, P. John Loganathan faced death at one point.

But he defied doctors' prognosis that he would not live long and today, the 57-year-old is ready to climb another mountain - Mt Kinabalu - to raise funds for charity.

Miraculous recovery: John walking down a street recently.

Although it has been years since he recovered from his ordeal, John said he wanted to celebrate life and help others.
“I am ready to take on another mountain' and raise funds for charity even though some are worried for me considering my past,” he said.

John said he wanted to do it as many people were still unaware of children's welfare and needs, let alone the work done by Shelter Home which houses 45 children and five schools accommodating 350 Myanmar refugee children.
In 1980, John, then 26, was diagnosed with dyskinesia, a nerve problem resulting in involuntary movements.

By the fourth year, he became paralysed and faced death. Miraculously, his life changed for the better - he gradually got better and recovered.
Today, it is hard to believe that he had dyskinesia, suffered much pain, looked wasted and could not move any part of his body, except his eyes.

Doctors had sent him home and told him to “pray to your God” as they could not do anymore to help him.

His wife, Daisy Chelliah, was told to be prepared for his death within two weeks.

John with his wife, Daisy, back when he was recovering from dyskinesia in 1984.
“Although I could not move, I could still think and I continuously proclaimed that I could do all things through God,” he said, adding that many fellow Christians also fasted and prayed for him.

“I began to feel better and decided to stop taking my medication because it was not helping me. I forced myself, instead, to move my body,” John said.

He had boils all over his body but he persevered and applied olive oil and prayed for healing.

His prayers were answered and the couple went on to have two sons.

John said he was preparing himself for the Mt Kinabalu feat by jogging twice a week, cycling, playing badminton and hoped to hike some hills before the trip from July 13 to 16.

Shelter Home's Mt Kinabalu Charity Climb coordinator Edwin Jalleh said 30 people were needed to join in the climb and each raise RM2,000. It is still short of 12 people.

She jumped up as soon as she saw the surgeon come out of the operating room. She said: 'How is my little boy? Is he going to be all right? When can I see him?'

The surgeon said, 'I'm sorry. We did all we could, but your boy didn't make it.'

Sally said, 'Why do little children get cancer? Doesn't God care any more? Where were you, God, when my son needed you?'

The surgeon asked, 'Would you like some time alone with your son? One of the nurses will be out in a few minutes, before he's transported to the university.'

Sally asked the nurse to stay with her while she said good bye to son. She ran her fingers lovingly through his thick red curly hair. 'Would you like a lock of his hair?' the nurse asked. Sally nodded yes. The nurse cut a lock of the boy's hair, put it in a plastic bag and handed it to Sally.

The mother said, 'It was Jimmy's idea to donate his body to the University for Study. He said it might help somebody else. 'I said no at first, but Jimmy said, 'Mom, I won't be using it after I die. Maybe it will help some other little boy spend one more day with his Mom.' She went on, 'My Jimmy had a heart of gold. Always thinking of someone else. Always wanting to help others if he could.'

Sally walked out of Children's Mercy Hospital for the last time, after spending most of the last six months there. She put the bag with Jimmy's belongings on the seat beside her in the car.

The drive home was difficult. It was even harder to enter the empty house. She carried Jimmy's belongings, and the plastic bag with the lock of his hair to her son's room.

She started placing the model cars and other personal things back in his room exactly where he had always kept them She lay down across his bed and, hugging his pillow, cried herself to sleep.

It was around midnight when Sally awoke. Lying beside her on the bed was a folded letter. The letter said:

'Dear Mom,

I know you're going to miss me; but don't think that I will ever forget you, or stop loving you, just 'cause I'm not around to say 'I Love You'. I will always love you, Mom, even more with each day.. Someday we will see each other again. Until then, if you want to adopt a little boy so you won't be so lonely, that's okay with me. He can have my room and old stuff to play with. But, if you decide to get a girl instead, she probably wouldn't like the same things us boys do. You'll have to buy her dolls and stuff girls like, you know.

Don't be sad thinking about me. This really is a neat place. Grandma and Grandpa met me as soon as I got here and showed me around some, but it will take a long time to see everything. The angels are so cool. I love to watch them fly. And, you know what? Jesus doesn't look like any of his pictures. Yet, when I saw Him, I knew it was Him. Jesus himself took me to see GOD! And guess what, Mom? I got to sit on God's knee and talk to Him, like I was somebody important. That's when I told Him that I wanted to write you a letter, to tell you good bye and everything. But I already knew that wasn't allowed. Well, you know what Mom? God handed me some paper and His own personal pen to write you this letter I think Gabriel is the name of the angel who is going to drop this letter off to you. God said for me to give you the answer to one of the questions you asked Him 'where was He when I needed him?' 'God said He was in the same place with me, as when His son Jesus was on the cross. He was right there, as He always is with all His children.

Oh, by the way, Mom, no one else can see what I've written except you. To everyone else this is just a blank piece of paper. Isn't that cool? I have to give God His pen back now He needs it to write some more names in the Book of Life. Tonight I get to sit at the table with Jesus for supper. I'm sure the food will be great.

Oh, I almost forgot to tell you. I don't hurt anymore the cancer is all gone.. I'm glad because I couldn't stand that pain anymore and God couldn't stand to see me hurt so much, either. That's when He sent The Angel of Mercy to come get me. The Angel said I was a Special Delivery! How about that?

I'm now in my Tri-semester 3 in my Foundation in Information Technology. It is my final semester before I step into my degree. I'm determined to major in Graphic & Multimedia. But I'm just the hand made of the Lord. I can only plan, only HE does it. Let's see where HE will bring me.

'This Is It' tops charts with $101M worldwide

LOS ANGELES -- "Michael Jackson's This Is It" pulled in $101 million worldwide in its first five days, and distributor Sony is extending the farewell performance film beyond its planned two-week run.

The film was the No. 1 Halloween thriller domestically with a $21.3 million opening weekend, according to studio estimates Sunday.

The previous weekend's No. 1 movie, Paramount's low-budget horror sensation "Paranormal Activity," slipped to No. 2 with $16.5 million, lifting its total to $84.8 million.

"This Is It" raised its domestic total to $32.5 million. The movie pulled in $68.5 million overseas, including $10.4 million in Japan, $6.3 million in Germany, $5.8 million in France and $3.2 million in China.

"He's just loved everywhere on the planet," said Rory Bruer, head of distribution for Sony. "It doesn't matter if it's Asia, Africa, Australia, Europe, South America. Every continent in the world loved him and his music."

In Great Britain, where Jackson had planned a marathon series of 50 London concerts starting last July, the movie earned $7.6 million.

"This Is It" captures Jackson in behind-the-scenes performances in the weeks before his death last June, as he rehearsed his biggest hits for the London shows.

"This Is It" originally was scheduled for a theatrical run of only two weeks. The studio has extended it a few more weeks domestically, leaving it in theaters through Thanksgiving weekend, one of the year's busiest moviegoing times.

Sony plans to extend the run of "This Is It" overseas on a country-by-country basis, with most territories probably getting one to three weeks of extra playing time, Bruer said.

The studio paid $60 million for film rights to Jackson's rehearsal footage, an investment the movie recouped in days.

"They bet $60 million on this and got $101 million in just five days," said Paul Dergarabedian, box-office analyst for Hollywood.com. "It was a gamble and a bet that paid off."

The movie fell far short of last year's $31.1 million opening weekend domestically for "Hannah Montana & Miley Cyrus: Best of Both Worlds Concert." But Bruer said "This Is It" has a shot at surpassing the $65.3 million domestic total during the entire run of Cyrus' movie, which tops the all-time charts for music documentaries.

Worldwide, "This Is It" already has shot past Cyrus' concert film. Cyrus mainly appeals to American teens, and her movie got only a limited release overseas, where it took in about $5 million to give the film a global total of just over $70 million.

"This Is It" played in 3,481 theaters domestically, about five times the number for Cyrus' movie. But "Best of Both Worlds" ran in 3-D, for which theaters typically charge a few dollars more.

And Cyrus' young fans are an audience segment that tends to rush out to see movies over opening weekend, the movie doing nearly half its business in the first few days.

Sony hopes for a longer shelf life for "This Is It," which drew older crowds that catch movies on their own schedule, with less regard for the opening-weekend frenzy. Fans older than 25 accounted for 62 percent of the audience, according to Sony.

While "Paranormal Activity" led Halloween's scary movies, an established horror franchise lost its fear factor as Lionsgate's "Saw VI" fell sharply in its second weekend after an anemic debut.

"Saw VI" came in at No. 5 this weekend with $5.6 million, raising its total to just $22.8 million after 10 days. Previous sequels in the serial-killer series all had topped $30 million during opening weekend alone.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Hollywood.com; final figures will be released Monday:

Jackson delivers on `This Is It,' early fans say

"Michael Jackson's This Is It" premiered to high praise from fans who applauded at each number as though they were at a concert and marveled as the singer stepped nimbly through his moonwalk and other signature moves.

Jackson, 50 when he died last June, kept pace with backup dancers half his age during rehearsals for such hits as "Thriller," "Billie Jean," "Beat It" and "Human Nature." The film was shot as Jackson prepared for a marathon concert stand in London that never happened.

"He looked better than he did when he was 30," said Jessica Childs, a 21-year-old aspiring dancer who caught the Los Angeles premiere. "His voice stood out."

Four of Jackson's brothers — Jermaine, Marlon, Tito and Jackie — attended, saying afterward that seeing their brother on film filled them with love and pride.

"It's amazing to see him up there doing his thing," Jackie Jackson said. "To see him up there doing his performance like that has brought a lot of tears to my eyes, sitting there watching him. Because I love him so much. That's why I keep this with me at all times in my pocket. It's a little token of him," he said, pulling out a white-glove key-ring fashioned after one of his brother's best-known accessories.

"It was closure for me," said Marlon Jackson. "And it was a moment where I just felt his spirit inside of me. And that made me feel good."

Performances in the film included a medley of Jackson 5 hits the singer originally performed with his siblings.

Most of the material was intended for Jackson's private use, but it now serves as the last bow of a performer who ruled the pop charts in the 1980s and later retired to a reclusive life amid allegations of child molestation.

The mood at simultaneous premieres around the world Tuesday and Wednesday was tearful yet celebratory. At the Los Angeles premiere near the arena where much of the rehearsal footage was shot, "This Is It" director and longtime Jackson collaborator Kenny Ortega introduced the film to the audience, calling it the "last sacred documentation of our leader and our friend."

"It was touching. Well done. It was beautiful," said Casey Gosh, 24, who was invited to the premiere by a friend. "It told his story. You really felt like you knew him. It was his final performance."

"I loved seeing him in action again," said David Montalvo, who saw "This Is It" in New York City. "It's like you were able to see Michael again for the last time, so it was a good chance to say goodbye to him."

The footage revealed just how elaborate and demanding Jackson's comeback run of 50 planned concerts last July would have been. One segment showed how Jackson would have made a grand stage entrance inside a mechanical spider. Another, intended as a 3-D film accompaniment on "Thriller," featured an expansive graveyard set.

"We thought it was excellent. The concert we never saw," said Marilyn Morrison, who also saw the film in New York. "Just seeing all the moves, his original moves, just seeing him doing them again. Just wonderful."

Early reaction from critics was equally positive. Matt Soergel of The Florida Times of Jacksonville calls it an "exuberant, astonishingly entertaining concert film." "Looks like the world has missed one helluva concert," writes Kirk Honeycutt of The Hollywood Reporter. And Nekesa Mumbi Moody of The Associated Press said, "The amazing performances Jackson delivers in this film are not a result of camera magic, but Jackson's own."

The film already was getting repeat business. Gina Meconi and a friend attended the Los Angeles premiere then went to one of the first public screenings at the new adjacent Regal theater.

"I had tickets for this anyway, so I said let's go see it again," Meconi said. "It was awesome. I loved it. I thought it was going to be sadder, but it wasn't sad at all."

Elizabeth Gonzales slept outside overnight to buy tickets to see the film at the Regal. Wearing a fedora, a spangled glove and a red leather jacket a'la "Beat It," she said the movie was worth the wait.

"I thought it was great," the 19-year-old said. "People were clapping, screaming. It was crazy. It's like he's still alive. People still scream for him. His music is still alive."

Before the Los Angeles premiere, Ortega wiped away tears as he greeted dancers and celebrity guests, including Paula Abdul. Among others attending were Will Smith, Jennifer Lopez, Paris Hilton, Neil Patrick Harris, Katy Perry and Motown Records founder Berry Gordy Jr.

Said Abdul afterward: "It was beautiful. It was sad. It brought you closer to who he was as a person."

It was the biggest cinematic blowout ever for a music film as "This Is It" opened for paying customers immediately after the premieres, with evening and midnight screenings in North America to middle-of-the-night and morning showings in Europe, Asia and elsewhere.

Distributor Sony, which paid $60 million for the film rights, opened "This Is It" in 99 countries. It expands to 110 territories this weekend.

"I was tossing and turning with nervous feelings all night. Michael Jackson is a hero in my life, and I cannot wait to see the final shot of Michael," said Noh Kyeong-ae, a 34-year-old accountant, sobbing at a movie theater in Seoul, South Korea.

The simultaneous showings around the globe were anchored by a star-studded premiere at the Nokia Theatre, a concert venue across the street from Staples Center, where many of Jackson's rehearsals — and his high-profile public memorial — were held.

The plaza in front of the Nokia Theatre was transformed into an elegant red-carpet arrivals area, with a dozen crystal chandeliers, displays of Jackson's past costumes and "This Is It" spelled out in giant letters.

Jackson memorabilia was on sale inside, from T-shirts proclaiming "I Love MJ" to key rings reading "King of Pop."

The film captures Jackson dressed with customary flamboyance, his fashion flourishes including military epaulets, sequins and gold-spangled pants.

Jackson backup dancer Misha Gabriel said the film is "such an honest and raw look at the creative process that at times it makes me think that maybe he wouldn't want people to see so much of the creative process before it was finalized. But I think that's the beauty of the film."

"It's Michael becoming great, perfecting his perfection, if that makes sense," said fellow dancer Nick Bass.

Some of Jackson's family and friends saw "This Is It" in advance. Elizabeth Taylor, a longtime friend of the pop star, posted her thoughts Monday on Twitter.

"It is the single most brilliant piece of filmmaking I have ever seen," she wrote. "It cements forever Michael's genius in every aspect of creativity."

The 77-year-old actress added that she "wept from pure joy at his God-given gift" and urged her fans to see the film "again and again."

Clocking in at one hour, 51 minutes, the film was culled from more than 100 hours of footage that captures Jackson as a showman, a mentor coaching backup talent and a goodwill ambassador.

Near the film's end, Jackson and the crew hold hands as he gives them a pep talk about the London shows.

"It's a great adventure," Jackson tells his colleagues. "We want to take them places they've never been before. We have to bring love back into the world."

You know it and we know it: There's no such thing as a perfect relationship. Every couple has a few issues they need to work through. Meet Brad and Kari (we've changed their names), a real-life couple with a real-life dating dilemma. We'll offer some advice to help them build a better relationship.

Brad Says : She’s Too Spontaneous

When Kari and I have a date, I like to know what we’re going to do ahead of time. But Kari has this habit of planning something else and totally forgetting about the plans we’d already made. And it’s getting on my nerves.

Take what happened a few weeks ago. I wanted to make a nice dinner for Kari. I told her twice that I wanted to cook for her on Friday night, including a reminder at lunch that day. I thought I made it pretty clear that this was something I really wanted to do.

So anyway, I went to the grocery store that afternoon and bought a bunch of stuff to make a great dinner. I even bought her a rose.

But when I got to her house, she told me her friend Sarah had called to see if we wanted to eat together, and Kari had said, “Sure.” All my plans went out the window, and I was ticked. I felt like Kari was completely insensitive to something that was important to me. I mean, I like her spontaneous nature, but I don’t like it when she messes up our plans.

Kari Says: He’s So Inflexible

When Sarah asked if we wanted to eat at her place, I thought Brad would appreciate not having to worry about cooking. I figured he could always fix dinner another night. Besides, this change in plans would give Brad and me more time to do something together after dinner, like go for a bike ride or hit the mall.

When I told Brad about eating with Sarah, I couldn’t understand why he got so upset. He hadn’t made his dinner plans sound all that important. I thought he was just cooking so we’d have something to eat. It didn’t seem like a problem to do something different.

But Brad can get so caught up in sticking with a plan. I don’t know why he can’t just go with the flow and do whatever. We still hung out together that night — isn’t that what’s important?

Our Advice:

Brad and Kari are experiencing something pretty typical in relationships: false assumptions. Basically, they both assume the other person thinks and feels the way they do. For instance, Brad assumed Kari was as set about their plans as he was. Kari assumed Brad just wanted dinner. Those assumptions are what got them into this little tiff.

The truth is, Brad and Kari think and feel differently, especially when it comes to making plans. Obviously, Brad likes to plan ahead, organize the details and follow through on the plan. Kari, on the other hand, is cool with just hanging out with Brad and doing whatever sounds fun at the time. They’re different people with different ways of approaching their dates.

To prevent incidents like this dinner disaster, Brad and Kari need to strike a balance. They each need to make an effort to understand the other person’s approach. When Brad makes plans, Kari can ask him straight out if those plans are flexible. If he says no, Kari needs to stick with Brad’s plan, or at least agree to talk with him before changing their plans. That way, she can avoid the last-minute changes that bug Brad so much.

At the same time, Brad needs to get a little looser about scheduling stuff with Kari. Sure, making dinner for someone involves planning, and Brad had only the best intentions for a special date with Kari. But if he’s willing to do some spur-of-the-moment stuff once in awhile, he might discover that it can be pretty fun to be spontaneous. And Kari might be more willing to fit into Brad’s structured plans if she's getting an equal chance to be a free spirit.

The bottom line is that Brad and Kari, like all couples, need to communicate their needs and expectations clearly instead of making assumptions.

GLENDALE, California - Paris Jackson wept as she stepped into the mausoleum where her father, Michael, was to be entombed. Katherine Jackson, overcome by sorrow, turned back when she was faced with her son's final resting place.

On a sultry Thursday evening, amid a sea of white flowers and with a bejeweled crown placed atop his casket by his children, the King of Pop was given an intimate, private version of the lavish public memorial held shortly after his death in June.

The funeral at Glendale Memorial Park was simple but touching, according to one guest. The person, who asked not to be identified because of the sensitivity of the day, said Gladys Knight's performance of the hymn "Our Father" (The Lord's Prayer) soared in the vast mausoleum and moved many to tears.

When it was over, many of the 200 mourners hugged each other. Among them were Elizabeth Taylor, Jackson's ex-wife Lisa Marie Presley, Barry Bonds and Macaulay Culkin.

The Rev. Al Sharpton, who gave a eulogy at the public event and at Thursday's service, also extolled Knight's earlier performance of "His Eye is on the Sparrow."

"Gladys Knight sang her heart out. Now we prepare to lay him to rest," Sharpton posted on his Twitter account during the service that was held outside and then within the marble mausoleum.

The mourners followed the crowned, lushly flower-draped casket as Jackson's five brothers — each wearing a bright red tie and a single crystal-studded glove — carried it into the mausoleum. The 11-year-old Paris cried as the group entered the imposing building and was comforted by her aunt, LaToya.

Paris and brothers Prince Michael, 12, and Prince Michael II, 7, known as Blanket, began the service by placing the crown on their father's golden casket. They were composed through most of the hour-and-a-half ceremony.

As it ended, Katherine Jackson appeared extremely weary and had to be helped to her car, according to the guest. Earlier, she had a difficult time going into the mausoleum; she was overcome, turned back, and it wasn't clear if she went in at all, the guest said.

The Jackson family's tardy arrival delayed the service for nearly two hours; no explanation was given to mourners. The invitation notice indicated the service would begin promptly at 7 p.m.; it began closer to 8:30.

The 77-year-old Taylor and others were left waiting in the late summer heat, with the temperature stuck at 90 degrees just before sunset, and some mourners fanned themselves with programs for the service. As darkness fell, police escorted the family's motorcade of 31 cars, including Rolls-Royces and Cadillacs, from their compound in Encino to Forest Lawn, about a 20-minute journey, with the hearse bearing Jackson's body at the end.

About 250 seats were arranged for mourners over artificial turf laid roadside at the mausoleum, and a vivid orange moon, a mark of the devastating wildfire about 10 miles (16 kilometers) distant, hung over the cemetery.

There were two oversized portraits of a youthful, vibrant Jackson mounted next to the casket amid displays of white lilies and roses. At Jackson's lavish public memorial, red roses covered his casket.

A large, blimp-like inflated light, the type used in film and television production, and a boom camera hovered over the seating area placed in front of the elaborate marble mausoleum. The equipment raised the possibility that the footage would be used for the Jackson concert documentary "This Is It," or perhaps the Jackson brothers' upcoming reality show.

More than 400 media credentials were issued to reporters and film crews who remained at a distance from the service and behind barricades. The few clusters of fans who gathered around the secure perimeter that encircled the cemetery entrance struggled to see.

Maria Martinez, 25, a fan from Riverside, California, who was joined by a dozen other Jackson admirers at a gas station near the security perimeter, gave a handful of pink flowers she had picked at a nearby park to a man with an invitation driving into the funeral.

"Can you please put these flowers on his grave?" she told him. "They were small and ugly, but I did that with my heart. I'm not going to be able to get close, so this is as close as I could get to him."

The man consented, adding, "God bless."

Glendale police said all went smoothly and there were no arrests.

Jackson will share eternity at Forest Lawn with the likes of Clark Gable, Jean Harlow and W.C. Fields, entombed alongside them in the mausoleum that will be all but off-limits to adoring fans who might otherwise turn the pop star's grave into a shrine.

The closest the public will be able to get to Jackson's vault is a portion of the mausoleum that displays "The Last Supper Window," a life-size stained-glass re-creation of Leonardo da Vinci's masterpiece. Several 10-minute presentations about the window are held regularly 365 days a year, but most of the building is restricted.

The Jackson family had booked an Italian restaurant in Pasadena for a gathering Thursday night, and family members and guests were seen coming and going late into the night.

"I feel like I watched Michael finally given some peace and I made a commitment to make sure his legacy and what he stood for lives on," Sharpton said outside the restaurant around midnight. "So at one level we're relieved; another level we're obligated."

The ceremony ends months of speculation that the singer's body would be buried at Neverland Ranch, in part to make the property a Graceland-style attraction. An amended copy of Jackson's death certificate was filed Thursday in Los Angeles County to reflect Forest Lawn as his final resting place.

In court on Wednesday, it was disclosed that 12 burial spaces were being purchased by Jackson's estate at Forest Lawn Glendale, about eight miles (13 kilometers) north of downtown Los Angeles, but no details were offered on how they would be used.

The King of Pop died a drug-induced death June 25 at age 50 as he was about to embark on a comeback attempt. The coroner's office has labeled the death a homicide, and Jackson's death certificate lists "injection by another" as the cause.

Dr. Conrad Murray, Jackson's personal physician, told detectives he gave the singer a series of sedatives and the powerful anesthetic propofol to help him sleep. But prosecutors are still investigating, and no charges have been filed.

Talk about love, the first thing that comes to some of our mind is running around trees singing duets. has been always suppressed within a miniscule range; boy meets girl and they call it love, girl smiles at boy and they again call it love. Stupid isn't it! I'm lucky, my thinking in not like that. But is that all about love?

I noticed many families avoid the word love from being mentioned in the household. I seldom see a brother saying I Love You to a sister. I also rarely see a dad saying he missed mom while he was away at work. Good night kisses sadly don’t exist in our families. Everyone expects everyone to understand love. You’re a family so love must be hiding somewhere beneath all the daily chores and chaotic life. Not only charity but love too starts at home.

I strongly believe love is an action rather than merely abstract feeling. When you love someone you have to show it out. What is the point of locking everything in a big Pandora box and expecting others to understand themselves? Any simple things may mean a huge load bigger to others when you do it wholeheartedly.

For instance putting your love and care into words. Write small notes for those who care for you. Good morning mom, thanks for the breakfast - and paste it on the fridge. She’ll be thrilled to make lunch. Dad, please drive safely back home - and text it to him. He’ll be waiting to get back home for tea. Sis, I have tones of stories to tell you - and mail it to Sister who’s studying far away. She’ll know that she’s not left out. All this tiny miny things actually accompany our loved ones throughout the day. These smiles that you provide them are the priceless gifts.

Love, I’d say is like our daily supplements. They’re supposed to be taken - and given in small dosages everyday in order to have a healthy life. They’re not medicines to be taken only when there is a disorder.

Love is such a powerful feeling that it can either produce or destroy. It depends on the way we channel it. When one allows love to evolve into obsession that is when things turn haywire. There are so many relationships I’ve known have gone to the drains because of either party’s obsession towards another. Sad to say, they haven’t understood the real meaning of love at all. Giving and taking, accepting each other’s flaws, stop feeding oneself with ego and finally giving enough space to each other may be the ingredients for a long-term healthy relationship.

Alright, love starts at home. What next? It should be cultivated with our surroundings. Look around, what is lacking? Love amongst us. I’m not talking about wars and deaths. Let’s just scale it down to people whom we meet in every day basis. Try flashing some cheerful smiles to the sanitary workers you see on your way to college. Say good morning to the old man who’s making his daily walks. Offer your seat to a pregnant lady in the bus. Help an old lady to cross the road. Feed some biscuits to the stray dogs. Celebrate your birthday in the orphanage. Hug at least one friend a day. Sit and listen to someone’s problem without being judgemental. Trust me; it will come back to you. Soon enough.

What is it by just loving others but neglecting yourself? Yes, you need to remind yourself that you do love you. Don’t just wait for others to do so. Put it into your actions. Do not do anything that destroys you. Physically and mentally. Quit smoking, if you do. Reduce alcohol, opt for other outings. Play safe - or don’t play at all. Go for long walks. Give yourself vacations every now and then. Pamper yourself with one of your pet peeves - occasionally. Remember, diamonds isn’t woman’s best friend, water is. Take good care of your appearance. Build up your confidence and don’t let a jerk boss to ruin it for you. Don’t play doormat for anyone - no guys worth that. Love yourself before you want others to.

Love everyone indifferently without seeing colors. It’s a very energizing feel that it would make you feel happier to face the world. From now on before going to bed, hug your parents and wish them night. Also no more hesitation to hug your siblings of opposite sex - under any circumstances. Let’s widen our cocoon of L.O.V.E. J

Readers may object my views. It’s a free country remember. These are my views on love and how it affects my daily life. And I’m not in any deep trouble by practicing my view - yet.

Well this is 2nd time going to KL with school friends. A total of 31 people went for the trip; 24 Upper 6 students, 2 Form 5, 3 teachers together with 2 Pn. Kamales's son.Not all the people came for KL Trip last year came. We went to Taylor's University College in Subang Jaya, Aquaria & KLCC. That's all. I was with Arvin & Suren. At Tailor's we got 1st place for the so called 'Explorace' and was awarded with a fail and note book. Had luch there. Friend Chicken, vege & taufu sambal. Well 3 of us going aroung and doing some crap in the Aquaria. When we 3 came out, we left the camera back. So we rushed back in and only to be stoped by security guard. When I told them about it they said wait but luckyly an English Lady saw it and bring it up to be handed to the security and i got it back. I thanked her alot. (to be continued)

31 October 2008, Friday....... a day which can't be forgotten....... my friend past away .... :( He met with an accident while on his way to school today morning. He was hit by a cement lorry and ran over his head.... when Matthew came to my class & told me, I x wanted to believe him, but seeing his face i realize that it was true...Matthews got the news when he contacted Jag, whom stays near Gobi's house. Ganesh say the accident on the way to school and when he came to school, he to Mat, Mat called Jag ....... my face changed..... my friends can see it.... when i told my class they where shock of their life...... I was too, shock of my life... It was a great blow..... I was in a position where i can't even cry.....On Thursday, he wa s sitting beside me and Sara as Danny was absent, we really joked around.... During recess I, Sara & Varusai was having our recess with him on Thursday... we we all joking around.....I did my Physic Practical with him on Thursday........as usual I did jokes while doing experiment, I can say he was very happy that day....No one though, he will be gone the next day....I took Jag number from Mat and went to see Pn. Kamales with Eddy... asked her for her phone... i contacted Jag & asked him what happen... he told...when i told her she was shock & shaken & was i n tears..... Pn .Kamales & we his friends (Me, Mat, Varusai, Eddy, Thiru & other's) wanted to go to hospital, but when we meet the (Granfather Cockroach) to seek permission because the principle wasn't there, he (Datuk Cockroach) didn't allow us...Later on the teachers went..... After school we went to his house..... his mum was crying over his helpless & lifeless body...... he was a very bright student....... very nice, quiet, humble person.... he was also writing a novel.....he was a Publicity Director in TLS...on of his work was the TLS Board.... he together with other, gave the board a fresh look with multilingual ( Tamil & English) info's......He has touched the heart of everyone who knows him with his own way, the only thing left behind is his pictures......His funeral was held on 1November2008 at around 11am........ His body will be cremated in Bercham.......His house address is 58, Hala Klebang Restu 13, Medan Klebang Restu, 31200 Chemor....... May your soul rest in peace......

tHe D-Day 4 KL

A trip that made me happier....... I wasn't sure whether to go or not b'cuz non of my friends had confirmed. But later on my friends agreed to go. But then still my heart was half.....go & x go.... at the end I went. First we went to KLCC where the PetroSains is situated. It was 'ok' but my friends all made it 'the best'..... u know...... what we will do when the gang forms....eheheh wait i forgot to tell about the situation in the bus.... We took the seat at the back of bus, at 1st it was bored.....then we gotgot the card, thats when the 'life' began to flow.... we played 'tipu', poker , 21 la, dOnkey la, snap la & much more.....very enjoying....Nw lets go to KLCC..... we was walking around when we saw 'Toilet RM2.00....wat a 'shockalingam' says Danny.....maybe got something special inside....hahahaha..... after rounding we went to PetroSains...... the dark ride was ok lah then inside also ok....

went we came out I went to the souvenier shop...
quite expensive i can say.....

then we left KLCC to Berjaya Times Square.......

in Times Square, first we went to KFC

after our 'finger licking good' at KFC, we went hunting, finding the bowling center..... at last we found, it was in 5th floor if i'm not mistaken.....i got 3rd place with 89 pts, 2nd Arvindan around 90 pts & the winner atuk Matthews with around 100 pts......

After that we went to the game zone, not much to be enjoyed there......... it was time to bid farewell to Times Square & KL..bye-bye we miss u KL

the enjoyment didn't end.... it continued inside the bus.... cards rolls again.... chit-chating & disturbing others......we went to KFC 4 our dinner again......before going back brought donut....all flavour, chocolate, apple,banana & other.....a wonderful day indeed and a day which I WON"T FORGET........ 'life is ONCE, U won't know when U gona leave the world,.... so enjoy
& keep de people beside YOU HAPPY!!!!.......'
